This golden oldie has some life left in it yet, especially with that great sensor inside. Take your time with this camera (well it's not really fast int he first place) and you can get some lovely images.

Canon G1X

I haven't used the G1X much I must admit. I planned on using it as my go anywhere camera but it's proving to be a little too big for that. I then went for the Panasonic GM1 which proved to be a perect size. I have two main problems with the GM1; the lack of a viewfinder which meand I have to put my glasses on to see what I'm framing on the viewfinder. My eyes aren't what they used to be Cry. Secondly, and this was the killer point for me, that damn small wheel on the back. I use EC a lot and using that little wheel is just impossible. Everytime I want to adjust it some other function comes up because the pressure pad is just too soft.

Later I'll post some images that I managed to make with the GM1 using the minute 12-32 lens. Don't get me wrong, I'm impressed with what this camera can produce because it has the same sensor as in the GX7 and there's nothing wrong with the images I get from that camera. I've decided that I just can't get used to using the GM1 and since Panasonic have just announced the GM5 which, for me, solves both problems I have with the GM1 I'm going to upgrade to the GM5. I just need a viewfinder and the GM1 will be the last camera I purchase without an EVF.

I believe I digressed a little there because this post is actually about the Canon G1X (original version). The images I get are actually very good indeed. The sensor is first class and colours and contrast are top. Shame about the mini OVF which doesn't always work for me. Because of the OVF problem I looked hard at the second version Canon has brought onto the market but they've changed some things that I'm not really too happy about. Firstly they've taken the EC wheel away and put it on one of the buttons on the back of the camera. Secondly, they've put a dmn wheel on the back to change the EC value. This is why I'm going away from the Panasonic GM1. The Mark II is therefore not an option but I will hang on to the original G1X because of image quality.

This point and shoot was really the most surprising camera of 2013 for me. The sensor is very good and is a 1.5" sensor. I must ask myself though why Canon didn't put an useable EVF or larger OVF in it. That would have made it perfect for me. As it is it's my go evrywhere camera where I'm not sure what to expect and I just want to blend in with the croud. Just looks like a G15/16, so it's somebody with a P&S and not worth a second look. My eyes not being what they once were, I have to wear my glasses to really compose which is a PITA really. It's also a reason why I normally don't use these cameras in this way.

Being quite small it fits in my shoulder bag or rucksack without any problems and battery life is pretty good. It's a sort of camera that you use if you want to take a single shot of something and definately not for anything that's moving. The above images show what's possible and I'll be using this camera on long walks in good light. I don't think Canon will be bringing out a second version of this camera, which is a real shame really, as a couple of improvement would make this camera a hot seller. I wish I could be a fly on a wall when these cameras are being designed, just to hear what actually goes on behind the scenes; like why did they bring this to market and what the idea was behind it.

Canon G1X

This is the last from the G1X for the present. I hope you've enjoyed the images from this somewhat excentric camera. I still think this was an experiment by Canon because it doesn't quite fit into any camera class. Since it's release there hasn't been a firmware update and I don't think there'll be one. A G2X will not be coming either in my opinion. They collected all the information they wanted and the project has been dropped. Again, that is just my opinion. Since the release of the G1X, the EOS-M has come onto the market but I don't think that camera is doing well either.

Nikon and Canon will have to carve out their market share with other cameras apart from their DSLRs because that's the way the market is going. Sony have released the A7/A7r and I think they will abandon their DSLT market altogether. C'mon Nikon and Canon, let's see what you can do.

Interesting times ahead.
