Panasonic LX5

Panasonic LX5

The LX5 came out in 2010 so it's already in it's fourth year. Panasonic took a long time to replace the LX5 with the LX7 but my LX5 just keeps on going. There's no interest on my part to upgrade to the LX7 at present, the LX5 does pretty well as is it.

The sensor is 1/1.63", so it's really tiny but it does the job. The sensor in the LX7 is 1/1.7", so it's actually smaller the LX5 sensor. The zoom range is the same, equivalent to a 24-90 (3.8x) so there's no advantage there. The only thing I can see that's better is the brighter lens: f1.4-f2.3 on the LX7 against f2.0-f3.3 for the LX5. But then again I don't use this camera indoors or in low light siuations anyway.

Conclusion: The LX5 stays.

I went back to my home country late in 2013 and I've just got around to processing the images. The LX5 really impressed me again with that small sensor inside. I said I wouldn't buy another camera with a small sensor but when I look at these images, I'm having second thoughts about it. For my purpose (web) the quality is really good enough and I hardly ever print these days.

Just a fun photo of me and the wife out for a walk. I haven't done one of these images before but I've seen them floating about the Internet so I thoguht it about time I made one. Nothing more, nothing less.

I call this image "Blue Water" for obvious reasons. I find it interesting because the roots look like outstreched arms reaching out to the water. It has a blue colour because it's in shadow of course. I cold have changed it but I like the image the way it is.

Let's go back to this misfit camera for a day ot two. I'm actually quite impressed with the detail in the images and dynamic range isn't all that bad either for the size of the sensor (1.5").

Some cameras produce images that convert well to B&W. Others are only ok. The files from the Canon G1X are ok and don't come close to those from the Fuji cameras. The Fujis (X-E1 and the X100S) produce files that are a dream to convert in Nik SFXII.

The image above was processed in my normal workflow and it looks slightly oversharpened to me so I'm going to have to modify my workflow slightly for these images. Most camera files require a certain workflow because each manufacturer process them differently, even in raw format.

Another tip if you are using or planning on purchasing the Canon G1X, underexpose slightly. It does tend to overexpose and the whites will blow out for you unless you compensate. I think every Canon camera I've had tends to do this and it has become a matter of fact that I enter a negative EC on all Canon cameras that I use.

If you're interested all these images were processed in Lightromm v5.2. I only shoot raw because the raw converters get better and better so you could go back and reprocess all your raw files if need be. I have noticed a big difference between Lightroom versions and with v5.2 new functions come in to play all the time. If you're a jpg shooter only, think about taking some raw images and process them in the latest software package you have. There will be a big difference in image quality. I guarantee it.

One thing I've noticed is that when taking images at it's widest focal length, and then you use the distortion correction in LR you will see a little pincushion effect at the top and bottom of the images. This means you will have to crop slightly, but it's very minimal. You lose only a little resolution, and it won't affect your prints (if you print) in any way.

Taken at full zoom which is equivalent to 112mm.You have to admit it's quite sharp with plenty of detail.

You must admit the image quality is very good. One thing that came to mind when I got the G1X was the size of the thing. Lets put it this way, it's not small. It will fit in a jacket pocket and forget about your shirt pocket. It's a little larger than I anticipated for a P&S camera, but I can live with that.
