I know I posted some images from this camera only a short time ago, but I must come back to it. I took it back home with me together with the Panasonic LX5 which produced some amazing images while there. So I would like to post some collages (2 images per page) to show you what this camera can do.

Just because it's got a crappy OVF (which is unuseable) and it's a fixed lens camera, it doesn't mean that it can't produce some nice images. Don't forget it has a 1.5" sensor in there which is quite large. It looks like a P&S and handles like on too but had a bigger body. Even Dpreview had a hard time classifying this camera, because it's not an ordinary run-of-the-mill P&S.

This is probably the best image I have ever taken with the LX5. That's my opinion of course. The light was difficult and changing all the time. Again, this camera has impressed me but the image has of course been worked on in Lightroom v5.2 and in Photoshop.

When purchasing a film camera, it lasted a number of years and new cameras were seldom. You just didn't get the yearly updates we are experiencing today. You were then locked into that system because what was even more important were the lenses you bought for that camera. The lenses were the most important element and that still holds true today. Cameras come and go but if you purchase a good lens you tend to keep it.

Some might be asking where is all this leading to, so I'll just come out and say it. In my opinion, today, what is becoming more apparent is that the most important part of the final image is how it's processed. If you decide to shoot in jpg format and do nothing with them after you'vce downloaded them onto your PC, then yout images will always be mediocre. You might get one or two very good ones but the majority will be just so-so.

Your opinion might be different than mine on this point - thoughts?

Some fine images, for me, were captured during the few days when I was back in my home country. I just hope you enjoy these as much as I do, and it was great fun being back there again.

I must say one of the things I love on the LX5 is the format change ring around the lens. I change format quite often and that ring is a godsend. I wish all cameras had it. I believe it's becoming fashionable on these type of cameras anyway so that's a good thing.

Panasonic LX5

The LX5 came out in 2010 so it's already in it's fourth year. Panasonic took a long time to replace the LX5 with the LX7 but my LX5 just keeps on going. There's no interest on my part to upgrade to the LX7 at present, the LX5 does pretty well as is it.

The sensor is 1/1.63", so it's really tiny but it does the job. The sensor in the LX7 is 1/1.7", so it's actually smaller the LX5 sensor. The zoom range is the same, equivalent to a 24-90 (3.8x) so there's no advantage there. The only thing I can see that's better is the brighter lens: f1.4-f2.3 on the LX7 against f2.0-f3.3 for the LX5. But then again I don't use this camera indoors or in low light siuations anyway.

Conclusion: The LX5 stays.

I went back to my home country late in 2013 and I've just got around to processing the images. The LX5 really impressed me again with that small sensor inside. I said I wouldn't buy another camera with a small sensor but when I look at these images, I'm having second thoughts about it. For my purpose (web) the quality is really good enough and I hardly ever print these days.
