Sony Alpha A7 - Pentax-M SMC 28 f2.8

Sony Alpha A7 - Pentax-M SMC 28 f2.8

When you look at this lens mounted on the A7 it's really not all that big and it handles well, balance wise. However, if you look closely the adapter needed is the same size as this tiny lens and actually doubles the size as a whole. This is one drawback of using legacy lenses on these cameras. The rangefinder lenses are much better in this respect as the adapter is actually quite small and you hardly notice it's there. The size is then reduced and it handles better than the SLR lenses. There are some very good lenses in the SLR arsenal but when you start to put some long lenses on these cameras with the adapter attached then they really become rather long and at low shutter speeds, the problem of shutter shock becomes a real problem; especially with the A7R.

Panasonic LX5

Panasonic LX5

The last photo from the LX5 for the present time. I've made the decision not to buy another small sensor camera, there is no real reason for it anymore. There are small cameras out there encorporating a large sensor (RX100 from Sony comes to mind). I think this is the way forward and the small sensor will quickly die out. They really are too noisy although some of the images prove to be useable. So, when this little camera dies on me, the next one will have a large sensor in it but at the moment there's no sign of the LX5 breaking. As long as it's working I'll keep using it as my funds are not endless and the images, as the one above, looks great to me. Some might have other thoughts on it, but it's good enough for me.

Sony Alpha A7 - Nikon E Series 100 f2.8

Sony Alpha A7 - Nikon E Series 100 f2.8

I now have a couple of these E Series lenses and they give outstandingly good image quality on my Nex and M43 cameras. I have yet to test any manual focus lens on the Fujifilm X camera as the 2 native zooms I have for it (the 18-55 kit zoom and the 55-200 tele zoom) are so good I don't feel the need for any more lenses or experimentation.

However, since the new Alpha cameras from Sony have no real native lenses available for them (at the time of this post) I have to experiment somewhat with manual focus lenses. I must admit also, I'm so taken by the pure pleasure I get from using all types of manual lenses, it's actually the reason I purchased the Sony cameras. The problem now of course is finding lenses that behave on these new full frame sensors. 35mm or shorter is going to be a problem with rangefinder lenses and I have a couple of those but we're not restricted to those rangefinder lenses, there are a multitude of SLR lenses that we can use.

I have some Nikon, Olympus and Pentax lenses that were class leading at the time they were manufactured and they perform very well on APS-C or M43 sensors but that doesn't mean the same performance can be achieved on a full frame sensor. I'll be testing quite a number of lenses in the near future to weed out those that don't perform well, and keep those that perform well for my landscaping escapades. I'll let you know how I get on.

Photographing the photographer. I think a lot of people do this, I know I do it all the time although I have no clue as to why. I got cought here and when he saw me he brought the camera to his eye and took one of me photographing him. I think that's how it normally works, isn't it?

He's holding an Olympus E-PL5 with the 45 f1.8 attached. Really nice combo, fast, light and it didn't feel too small in the hand and it wasn't too light. I must say the external EVFs are a thing of the past, for me at least. I don't think I'll buy another camera that has one, they just really get in the way and increase the size on the camera as a whole. The trend that I'm seeing now is to integrate the EVF in the camera which is how it should be and all the new cameras coming out nowadays has one integrated.

Sony Alpha A7R - Carl Zeiss Tessar 85 f4 ZM T*

Sony Alpha A7R - Carl Zeiss Tessar 85 f4 ZM T*

I found this lens quite cheap on one of the on-line shops just before Christmas this year. I just couldn't let it go after I tried the Zeiss Planar 50 f2 lens on the A7R. From what I've seen of the images taken so far with this lens it's very good indeed. I think it's a keeper lens and fits nicely with my favoured focal length.

Today, I'll be going out to test a couple of legacy 135mm lenses, weather permitting,  and will probably post some images later today with what I hope to be some nice looking images. Not promising they'll be masterpieces though, it's just to see the lenses signature on what is undoubtedly one of the best sensors ever made. I read on one popular blog about the dynamic range of the A7R sensor and I have to agree, I see no whites blowing out and if they do seem a little bright, I can bring them down quite easily in PP.

Sony Alpha A7 - Olympus OM 100 f2.8

Sony Alpha A7 - Olympus OM 100 f2.8

This is where things start to get interesting. All the other lenses I've shown so far have been rangefinder lenses which could, theoretically cause problems on the new Alpha cameras, and probably will. SLR lenses on the other hand do not cause this colour cast problem and are the better choice of lenses. I have some excellent Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and a couple of other lenses from other manufacturers and they are very good. Because I prefer shooting with a rather longer focal length I have a few 75mm to 135mm lenses which I have high hopes for. These alpha cameras were purchased because of these old but excellent manual focus lenses. It's only a matter of practice before one becomes pretty proficient at using them with success.

Sony Alpha A7 - Voigtländer Heliar 15 f4.5

Sony Alpha A7 - Voigtländer Heliar 15 f4.5

This is the widest lens I have for the FF cameras I now own and I must admit it's very difficult to achieve good images with it. It takes a lot of practice with a wide angle lens because fore, middle and background must have something that fills the frame. I don't think I've achieved the stage where I can use this lens with any degree of confidence. I have a long way to go. Looking now at this image I also have to admit it could do with a good clean.

I used this lens quite a bit on the Nex-5N but only for B&W conversion on the Nex-7 because of the colour cast problem. This will show it's face again on the Alpha cameras, be certain of it. The weather being very bad at present, testing this lens isn't really an option, I would only get soaked and the equipment as well.

Before I go on with this post a MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all. Another year is nearly over and time seems to just fly by, I know it does for me. I have been enjoying doing this photo blog for the last two years (even though not many people read it) and I have no intention of stopping. If truth be told, I'm really doing this for myself and if other people read it at the same time, all the better.

The above image again taken at the beach. I tend to just go around with this camera and really using it as a P&S. It's amazing sometimes how the images come out. I really like the image above, it just shows people on the beach, having some drinks and just enjoying the day out. It really was what was intended. I took a lot of images on that day and although quite a few got thrown out immediately, I did manage to get some keepers.

These images were taken in Spain at the same time I took my Nikon V1 cameras along to test a few lenses. There are times when you just don't want to take anything big-ish along with you somewhere so these little P&S cameras do have their uses.

This image for example was taken down on the beach on quite a windy day and I didn't want to start changing lenses with all that fine sand flying about, so out came the LX5. I didn't have the EVF with me at the time so these images were taken with the camera being held at arms length. I keep thinking at the time I take these photos that they'll only be snapshots and nothing special but correct post processing brings out some really nice images.
