Fujifilm X100S

Fujifilm X100S

This is one image that has impressed me the most about this camera.  Rich greens and reds without overdoing it. Nothing is blown out and it is sharp. This the way I wish all my images looked. I'm not a friend of some of the images I've seen on the Internet, I wouldn't call them soft but I do prefer a bit of sharpness in an image.
Manual focusing again and hand held I had to open up a bit to keep the shutter speed up. That's the rerason for the background not being sharp. It's outside of the depth of field for the aperture set. The lens was actually nearly wide open at f4 for this image.

Another attempt at manual focus. Normally with this sort of image, when using AF the camera will not focus on the relection but on what is closest to the camera. Using manual focus you can override this by focusing on the reflection, which is how it should be. As you can see manual focus works pretty well.

After a lot of talk on some forums regarding mushy foliage with the Fujifilm cameras, I thought I would just test this one out. Well, either this doesn't happen in the jpg files, or it happens only during the raw conversion. I think that now I've seen the files in jpg I think this applies to raw files only. I'll have time to test those out with LR 4.4 very soon and I'll post a comparison to those who are interested.

Since I'll be shooting a lot with this camera at apertures of f5.6 or f8, I wanted to see how depth of field I'm going to get. This image was shot at f5.6 but still shows some background blur. The plant is nice and sharp too. The images do seems to be a little soft at f2 but I think they sharpen-up quite nicely in Photoshop.

Another manus focus image. I was getting carries away as this camera is really fun to use. Again, I like the bokeh, it's smooth and not funky as with some manual focus legacy lenses I've used. This lens was paired to the sensor in this camera. The image quality shows it too, and to those people who are sitting on the fence about the X100S; you really don't know what you're missing.

I think this is my favourite image of the day. The colours are so subtle and the flower is quite sharp. I like the bokeh of this shot too. Everything just falls into place. This is another manual focus test and I got it right in all 3 images I took of this plant.
I must admit I didn't get around to shooting in macro mode on this occasion, but it is definately on my to-do list as manual focusing with this camera is really nice.

After getting used to the camera and feeling my way with the controls and how it really works, I tried my hand on manual focus using the peeking function. It works rather well but not as well as on the Sony cameras. This is one such shot and just to make sure I was doing it right I took 3 or 4 images of the same subject. I'm quite impressed again.

Lovely colour rendering in this image. The colours are strong, without being over cooked. The reds are fine and the greens are deep. Just as it was on the day. No blocked up blacks and the rock has good structure.
These images look just the way I like to look. Totally different from Canon, and very realistic. I'm not saying the Canon files are bad, they are just different. I would have to work a lot harder in post processing to get this look with the Canon files. That's using the raw file mind, and don't forget this Fujifilm file is a jpg.

Camera settings: I usually shoot in aperture mode and sunny WB when I'm out.
For this camera I set it up as follows: A mode,Auto WB and ISO to Auto 3200.
I was changing the aperture on the lens and just left the camera to figure everything out. I didn't have to worry about ISO settings because these Fujifilm cameras are so good at higher ISO values that you just can't see any noise up to 3200. If the auto WB wasn't any good, well I still have the raw files to play with once the camera is supported. I needn't have worried because auto WB is spot on, and that is indoors as well as outside. Fujifilm have made some advances in this area and have become my cameras to beat for future camera purchases.
Saying that, these cameras might just become my system in the future, once I see what the lens development is like. That 55-200 certainly sounds good at the moment for the X-E1. It's the one area that's missing at the moment.

Because LR 4.3 doesn't support the raw files from the X100S, everything is now being sayed as raw-Fine jpg. All the images being posted are jpg images. The raw files are being saved for LR 4.4 or whichever version of LR supports the camera. I'm not going to install yet another version of Silkypix, it's just not going to happen.
I was a bit apprehensive about the output I would get from this camera, as I never shoot in jpg. I'm a raw only photographer.
I can now say that these are the best jpg files I have ever seen. I'm not saying I've used every camera on the market but I find these much better than the Pentax, Canon, Panasonic and yes, even better than the Olympus jpg files. Dynamic range, white balance and colours are really excellent. The camera was set to auto WB for this shoot and I an very impressed with the output.
