01/06/14 Sony Nex-5N - Pentax M Takumar 28 f2.8I have a lot more images taken with this lens so instead of posting one image per day I've decided to compile 2 or 4 images together as a single post. I hope you find this better than posting too many images from a system one per day. I'll be doing this more and more in the future as I think it gives you a better idea of the quality one can achieve with these lenses. One more to come after this one today. 1220
unknown Focal Length: unknown Aperture: unknown Exposure Time: unknown ISO: unknown 01/05/14 Sony Nex-5N - Pentax M Takumar 28 f2.8The image above is one of the best renditions I have achieved with any of my lenses. All I can say is that it's excellent and I can only astound when looking at this image at 100%. 1285
NEX-5N Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/500 sec ISO: 100 01/04/14 Sony Nex-5N - Pentax M Takumar 28 f2.8For some reason I feel that some lenses focus better on the Nex cameras than others, and by that I mean using the peaking function to manually focus at a certain point. This lens is one of the better ones as I find it very accurate. Some of the longer focal length lenses (e.g. the CV 90 f3.5) takes a lot more work to achieve the correct focus point. This lens is real fun to use as I can focus quickly and accurately. The better handling makes me want to use the lens more hence I tend to photograph more subjects. I tend to be more creative when using lenses I like using, but then again, I think that's true of everything in life. 1176
NEX-5N Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/2000 sec ISO: 100 01/03/14 Sony Nex-5N - Pentax M Takumar 28 f2.8I've got a few Pentax lenses stored away in boxes with the rest of my manual focus lenses, but unfortunately, time is at a premium and I don't get out as much as I would wish to use these older lenses. On this occasion though, I mounted the Pentax Takumar 28 f2.8 on my favourite manual focus camera, the Sony Nex-5N. The image quality from this camera is astounding and if you haven't tried one, do, as you can get them very cheaply right now. I prefer it much more than the Nex-7 and I'm sure some people are going to think I've a screw loose somewhere for saying that. The Pentax Takumar 28 f2.8 can be had today for €100, and believe me, that is a real bargain. I can't think of a single thing to say against this lens, it's cheap, pretty wide, focuses great on the Nex-5N and produces great images. I can recommend this lens to anyone who likes these legacy manual focus lenses. The adapter is very cheap too, costing around €10. It can't get much better than that. 1074
NEX-5N Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/2000 sec ISO: 100 01/02/14 Olympus OM-D E-M5 - Panasonic 45-150 f4-5.6If the PZ 14-42 f3.5-5.6 performed better on the E-M5, how would the relatively new 45-150 f4-5.6 perform? Well, pretty well actually. I'm just posting this one image from this combination as I didn't take too many images with it. I would say this lens performs well on both Olympus and Panasonic bodies and is a bargain at the price. It is also quite small and light. I can recommend this lens to all those who want a little more range than the kit lenses. 1124

01/01/14 Olympus OM-D E-M5 - Panasonic PZ 14-42 f3.5-5.6I'll start this year off by posting another image from the Panasonic PZ 14-42 f3.5-5.6 mounted on the Olympus OM-D E-M5, which will be the last in the series. The above image was taken at f8 and the lens was at full zoom, 42mm, and I'm quite satisfied with the quality. If anyone has an idea why this lens seems to perform better on the E-M5 please let me know as it's a bit of a puzzle to me. I would have thought it would have performed better on the manufacturers own bodies, but that is not the case (in my opinion). 1118

12/31/13 Olympus OM-D E-M5 - Panasonic PZ 14-42 f3.5-5.6I personally like the above image and it was taken at 30mm, which is in the middle of the focal range of this lens. Sharpness should be at it's maximum at this point. Aperture was f8, and I don't tend to stop the lens down further than that on the m4/3 bodies. If you do step down further than f8 you will more than likely see some diffraction creeping in and image quality will suffer. This is the last post for 2013, and I would like to thank all of you who have been visiting this photoblog and helping me posting these random images. Any requests for 2014? Just mail me if you do and I'll see what I can do. 1324

12/31/13 Voigtländer Color-Skopar 20 f3.5 SLThis lens was quite a surprise when it arrived at my doorstep. Very small and light and fits well on the Alpha cameras. It performs quite well on the A7 but I've still to test it on the A7R. To be honest I've been using the A7 more than the A7R because I think I'm getting better results with it. I.e. Better percentage of keepers. I think there's something in the shutter shock theory now coursing the Internet. I'll have to do some more testing on this though when I have the time.
What I'm planning at present is test all my favourite lenses I've using on my Nex-7 on the A7R but I can tell you now, those lenses will not perform as well on the A7R. I've noticed this with the A7 and it really stands to reason, The Alphas are full frame where the Nex is only APS-C. Lenses have to be very good to perform well on the A7R and it may be that I only have a couple of lenses that will pass the test. I'm not going to sell my Nex cameras as I have a few lenses that I just love using on them, especially on the Nex-5N. This camera produces very good image quality, even though many will call it an OLD camera nowadays. It's small and my Voigtländer Skopar lenses fit nicely on it because the lenses are very small indeed.
The reson for posting the above image taken with the Voigtländer Skopar 20 f3.5 SL is to show the quality of the converted image to B&W. I seem to be getting better conversion results using a gradient map with these files, rather than using the Nik SFXII plug-in. The image was taken on a very dark, windy and rainy day; just perfect for this type of image. Hope you like it as much as I do. 1249

12/30/13 Olympus OM-D E-M5 - Panasonic PZ 14-42 f3.5-5.6Generally speaking, I find pancake lenses a good idea, but I'm finding that due to the design of the lenses, quality does suffer somewhat. The image above could easily be printed on A4 but you might find it suffers if printing any larger. 1140
E-M5 Focal Length: 30 mm Aperture: f/8.0 Exposure Time: 1/500 sec ISO: 200 • Panasonic • Olympus • E-M5 • 14-42 f3.5-5.6
12/29/13 Olympus OM-D E-M5 - Panasonic PZ 14-42 f3.5-5.6Thinking that the Panasonic PZ 14-42 f3.5-5.6 can't be as mediocre as I think it is, I mounted the lens on the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and took the system for an outing on the river Rhein in Germany. I read that someone had used this system and thought the image output was great and the lens was stuck to his E-M5. I'll be posting some images over the next few days from this combination and I'll let you decide what the image quality is like. My personal thoughts on this combination? Dare I say it but I believe the lens performs much better on the Olympus body than on the Panasonic bodies. Why and how that can be is beyond me but I'm just basing my conclusion on the image output I'm getting. Judge for youselves over the next few days. 1064
