Sony E 55-210 f4.5-6.3 OSS

Sony E 55-210 f4.5-6.3 OSS

I normally use my Sony Nex cameras for my legacy manual focus lenses because of the focus peaking function the cameras provide, which is the best implemented at the time of this post. Just my opinion of course. However Olympus and Panasonic have now introduced focus peaking into their systems and Fuji have upgraded their camera firmware which enables focus peaking. I haven't used the Olympus or Panasonic systems yet but I do have a Fujifilm XE-1 and I can tell you the focus peaking function is not my cup of tea. Only white is available and I find it really difficult to see while trying to manual focus. I wish they would provide more colours which would make it easier to see. White is just too common a colour for this and I tend to use yellow on my Nex systems. It really does stand out especially if I set the value to high.

Sometimes though, I like to use AF with the E system lenses and I tend to use the long end of every zoom I use. The 55-210 f4.5-6.3 was the only one I considered because it's cheap and pretty small. The keep the size of the lens small, they had to make the lens pretty slow. The fastest aperture available if f4.5 which is pretty slow and that's at the wide end. At 210mm you are at f6.3 which means this lens was not designed for low light hand held work. On a tripod you might be fine but I only use this lens when the light is good because most of my photography is done hand held. One thing it's got going for it is OSS which does really help me. I'm not as young as I was and I find these stabalization systems pretty good overall.

Nikkor VR 30-110 f3.8-5.6

Ok, this is the last image from this lens for now, promise. Shot at 69mm (186mm=35) which is just over half way along the focal range and you would expect the image to be sharp, well it is. Most zooms are at their sharpest in the middle of the zoom range and either the long or short end suffers usually. That's how it is normally but I'm really impressed by this zoom. I find it sharp thoughout the zoom range.

I hope you've enjoyed the images posted with this system, I have certainly enjoyed making them.

Nikkor VR 30-110 f3.8-5.6

Just two more images from this lens for now. I'm sure a lot of you aren't interested in this system because you think the sensor is too small. If you are looking around on the Internet for some info or reviews about this system you will find some names there that have adopted this system wholeheartedly and are successfully creating some amazing images with it. Granted it's not really a high ISO machine but I can't say it's all that bad either. The more I get to know it's limitations, the more I like using it. I can take the whole lens collection in a small shoulder bag as well saving me back pains.

This image was shot at 30mm and it shows just how sharp the lens is. Some say that it's not that sharp at the long end but that is not my experience. I've posted some images at 110mm and they are sharp to me.

I'm posting this image without any CA correction so that you see what I got. If you look carefully you can see a little CA that needs correction but it's nothing to worry about. I'd like to see the lens that didn't produce CA when taking this image. That CA is cleared in a second in LR, and it does a really good job of it too.

Ok we're back to this extraordinary lens again. I don't think I've seen such a small lens produce such images. It's a joy to use. There was no CA correction in the image above and there is a lot of detail in those trees.

There's a rule of thumb in photography, if you're going to photograph tall things like trees or towers, make sure you have an uneven number of them. I.e. 3, 5 or even 7. Try it out sometime, it really does make a difference. Here though I didn't have a choice in the matter, there were 4 trees. But it served it's purpose for me.

Even though this lens isn't particularly fast the VR system is good enough to get a sharp image. The image above was taken at 30mm (81mm equiv) with a shutter speed of 1/160 which is double the rule of thumb. So some of you might say that is no great feat, but the street was in shadow and was darker than the image implies. You may be right though and this doesn't prove how good the VR system really is. I might have to take some low light images to see just how good it is. But then noise does tend to creep in at higher ISO values.

The image was taken at f5.6 and as you can see the image is sharp from foreground to infinity, a great advantage of the smaller sensors, you don't have to stop way down to get the depth of field you want.

Nikkor VR 6.7-13 f3.5-5.6 Appetizer

The Nikon 1 camera system is quite amazing. It is small, fast with very accurate WB and focusing. What's not to like. On top of that it has some amazingly sharp lenses, including the zoom lenses and they are sharp wide open.

I think the best thing this system has got going for it is the battery lasts for EVER! When I look at the Fuji system, the batteries die on you before you've turned on the system nearly. OK, that might be a little over exaggerated but it certainy feels like it. As much as I like the Fuji X cameras that is one of the bad points about it. They really should get that sorted out. I have the grip for my X-E1 and it's a pain in the a**e every time I have to change batteries. Please Fuji, take note.

As a side note that Nikon battery is the same one they use in their DSLR systems, so it's no wonder they last forever in the 1 system.

The image above is just an appetizer to show the detail captured by 6.7-13 f3.5-5.6 lens. I have to take more images with this lens to be able to post some more but at present, it looks very promising. More on this lens later.

It's that lens again 2...

It's that lens again 2...

These two posts about the Olympus 14-150 f4-5.6 was just an interlude from the Nikon V1. This lens is so good that a few more posts are a must.

These clouds, known as lenticular clouds, are seldom seen in Northern Europe but I've seen them quite often in Spain on the Mediteranean coast. They're very interesting formations and take on shapes like flying saucers. It takes certain atmospheric conditions to produce these cloud formations, and it seems to happen more in warmer climates.

I just can't stop snapping away when I see them and my collection keeps growing but it doesn't stop me from taking more.
