The above image is just a standard orchid shot but it was taken hand held at 1/25th of a second at f8. That to me is pretty good because I really don't have these super steady hands that can hand hold at ridicilously low shutter speeds (envy creaping in here). Also notice the bokeh, even at f8 it's pretty good I think.

06/12/13 Olympus mZD 60 f/2.8 Macro1070
E-M5 Focal Length: 60 mm Aperture: f/8.0 Exposure Time: 1/25 sec ISO: 640 06/11/13 Olympus mZD 60 f/2.8 MacroAs you can see the lens is sharp and the Olympus colours are there too. I'm glad I took the OM-D because the light levels weren't all that great in the hall and IBIS was a great help. With a lot of shoving and pushing I got close to some of these orchids but had to struggle to get some shots. I nearly always took four of five shots of each orchid so that I could be pretty certain one would be sharp. In many instances only one image turned out sharp and a couple I didn't manage one sharp image. Shame but that's how it goes. 1025
E-M5 Focal Length: 60 mm Aperture: f/5.6 Exposure Time: 1/60 sec ISO: 200 06/10/13 Olympus mZD 60 f/2.8 MacroI don't know about you, but when I get a new lens, it's like Christmas all over again. The first thing I want to do is just go out and test it. When the weather is bad then I'll do something indoors, try and be a little creative but invariably fail.
Well, I received the Olympus mZD 60 f2.8 Macro teh other week and I've just managed to get out and test it. Luckily at the local part there was an orchid fair so off I went. Knowing that these things are crowd pullers I decided the OM-D was the camera for this job. The IBIS is amazing and a tripod or een a monopod would be of no use.
I was right, I think the whole of Frankfurt was in attendance and getting near to the orchids was a battle in itself. I managed to get a few but not nearly what I was hoping for. The following are a a few I though made the grade on this outing. 1072
E-M5 Focal Length: 60 mm Aperture: f/5.6 Exposure Time: 1/60 sec ISO: 200 05/09/13 Olympus mZD 60 f/2.8 Macro LensI've been missing a dedicated macro lens for my m4/3rd system since the start. Although the Panasonic 45 f/2.8 macro lens might be very good, it was just too shrt for my taste. Equivelent to 90mm on full frame cameras, my past eqperience with this focal length didn't suite me at all. My favourite macro lens of all time is the Sigma 150 f/2.8 lens. Simply superb, but too heavy using an adapter for this system, and it came in a Canon EF mount which restricts the use somewhat.
So after some time thinking about if I needed this lens, I purchased it with the intention of using it also for portraiture. I just prefer the longer focal lengths for this. Lets see how things go.
In the above image you can see what it looks like on the OM-D with the handgrip in place as well.
It was taken with the Fujifilm X-E1 (what else) and an old Nikon 100 f/2.8 lens. The lens cost me next to nothing and just look how sharp it is. 1146

03/16/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Although I like the above image I think this will be the last image that I will post from this lens. Unless something dramatic happens to change my mind about this lens it will get one more outing in summer in good weather to confirm my suspicions and then it will be sold.
Anybody interested in this lens, just get in touch with me.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/250 sec ISO: 100 03/15/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Something isn't right with the focusing mechanism with this lens or it doesn't like being paired up to a Nex camera. Although I use the peeking function I get the feeling that the image is misfocused. Not all of the time but in a lot of cases. No I do not have this problem with other lenses so I will dismiss the arguement that it's the photographer that is the problem in this case. I know the DOF is shallow at f3.5 but normally I stop the lens down to f5.6 or f8.
The image above is sharp whree I focused the lens, namely on the moss growing on the branch. I took three images of this just to make sure I got one and two out of three images were not in focus.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/250 sec ISO: 100 03/14/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7OK, I can't fault the lens for a lack of contrast in this image. There wasn't a lot there to start with.
As you can see the weather was pretty cold, colours were muted and dull. Probably the wrong type of weather to go out testing lenses but I have to utilize the time available to me.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/125 sec ISO: 100 03/13/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Some of these images I actually like, like the one posted today. It certainly is sharp enough but again, it took some work to get the look. Other lenses would have produced this with less effort.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/400 sec ISO: 100 03/12/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Some of these images might seem fine at this size but it take some doing in post production to get them to look this way. Better weather might help too as I think this lens would perform better with good sunlight. I might put it away right now and take it out again during the summer months (if we get a summer this year that is) and try it again. It does intrigue me to find the answer to that so that's what I'll do.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/250 sec ISO: 100 03/11/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7One of the major problems and one that is a deal breaker on lenses for me is the lack of contrast in the images. Some of you may argue that I can increase that in post production and you'd be right. I could, but I prefer lenses that have good micro contrast straight from the box. It's an extra step for my post processing workflow and there are better lenses out there.
