Panasonic GM5 - Panasonic Lumix G Vario 35-100 f4.0-5.6

Panasonic GM5 - Panasonic Lumix G Vario 35-100 f4.0-5.6

Let's face it, the Panasonic GM5 is a piece of engineering marvel. A m43 sensor in such a tiny body is a tribute to how far things have advanced in just a few short years. This would have been unthinkable even 5 years ago. Maybe the best thing about this camera is that it has the lenses to go with it. I have the GM1 but the lack of an EVF (together with my ageing eyes) means it hasn't been used that much. The GM5 however, has an EVF, albeit a small one and can't be classed as world leading; but it does the job for me.

I have used the 12-32 quite extensively and I've been impressed with the image quality. Being a telephoto sort of shooter I needed something longer in my bag and lo and behold Panasonic delivers the 35-100 f4-5.6. If it's anything like the 35-100 f2.8 then image quality would be excellent. The lens is really really tiny and can fit it a large coat pocket. Together with the 12-32 it gives you a range of 24-200 (in FF terms) and that covers something like 90% of my lens requirement.

Some people may find the system a little too small, but I think of it as something you can pack in a little corner somewhere and use it as a take everywhere system, or as a second backup camera because I don't think anyone can really complain about the image quality the m43 cameras gives us today. Really remarkable.

The following images come from my lens testing walk, and the images here are like some I post pretty often when I test lens performance. I just don't like doing brick wall tests; I go for a long walk instead. The images wll show exactly what this lens is capable of, and of course, what the system can actually produce. My verdict: Very good indeed. If you're looking for a small system with good range and good image quality, look no further that the Panasonic GM5 with the 2 kit lenses (if you can over the fact that the EVF won't break any world records).
