Fujifilm X100S

Final image from the X100S for now. I pasted some more images together, these show the colour rendition you get. Spot on too. I just wish I had a better feel for the camera when using it. Enjoy.

I've just put some more images into a composite to emphasize how good the images are. You may get the impression here that they're monochrome images, but they're not. The colour is quite muted but it is present. Very nice rendition.

Processed with Nik SFX II, the best converter on the market as I write this (just my opinion of course). It gives me the look for how an image should look like, lots of detail and some contrast to it. I hate some of the files now being shown on the Internet, flat, no contrast and lacking in detail. Not to my taste at all. A monochrome file is about black and white tones and not about grey. They should have some punch to them and that means a good dose of contrast. Your opinion may differ from mine, and that's how it should be. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

The image above is a good example of what can be achieved with these files from the X100S. This can't be done with the files from many other cameras. It looks a little like an HDR file but I can assure you it isn't. I've just done a little more processing than normally but it not in any way HDR.

The reason for showing you this file is because tomorrows post will show you how these files behave when treated to some monochrome conversion. I've said it before and I'll say it again, these files allow you to do a lot more with them than files from other manufacturers. I've had files fall apart when pushed a little. These files look great even when pushed a lot, like the image above.

Another example of the excellent image quality one gets from the X100S. Some have stated that the output from the original X100 is preferable and that was the camera I was going to purchase when it came out. However, when I read about the slow focusing and the quirks of using the camera I held off (unheard of for me) and waited for the the second iteration, the X100S.

The image above is sharp, has great colour accuracy and it simply appeals to me. Some may not agree with me here but it reminds me a little of the Leica files that I often see.

What is it about this camera that I like? Well, it must be the files I see after working on them. The above image is an example of this. It certainly isn't the comfort of holding the camera or it's fast autofocus. It even misfocuses from time to time. I just like the output, it's that simple.

Everytime I use it I get a feeling that I haven't got the shot I was after, every time. I've even added a thumbrest to it to try and get a little more stability into hand-holding it. It's helped but by no means is it perfect. I miss that little grip on the right hand side of the camera that fits right into your fingers. Simply put I need a grip of some sorts so I'm going to look into this when I have the time. For now though, I'm prepared to use the camera as is because I really like the files I get.

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

The last from the series for now. This lens screams to be used as a landscape lens. It is excellent and for the price I paid everyone should have one. Really good for architectural shots too but for some it might not be wide enough. I think I'm going to try this lens on a m4/3 camera, should be fun since I prefer the 4:3 ratio and I can set the cameras for the 1:1 format which is my prefered format. I think that is a real pain with the Nex series of cameras, that surely must be rectifiable with a firmware update.
Come on Sony, just get it fixed.

If you could see this image at full size, you would be amazed at the detail in the walls and you have sharpness throughout the image, from near to far. Just set the lens to f8 and the focusing to just shy of 2 meters and the DOF is enormous. No need to change anything except Exposure Compensation. Truely a point and shoot with this focal length. The same applies to my Voigtländer 15 f4.5 except the DOF with that lens is even greater, if that is possible.

This lens delivers excellent resolution and very good micro contrast. The lens reminds me of the Leica look which I totally love, but I'm not a real fan of rangefinder cameras. I don't like the price either which is a deciding factor in why I haven't got one. I am not prepared to pay €8000 for a camera body, Leica or not. And then come the lenses which aren't cheap either. I think I'll just stick to these cheap cameras and lenses and enjoy them.

Very smart decision IMHO. The real artists don't care about expensive tools as long as they can realise their visions. Good luck!

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

All the images made with this combination were converted with Nik SFX II. They just had to be converted because they all fit the location. An old monastery where I visited with a few cameras and lenses. In all I made three rounds of the buildings, each time with a different camera system. It took me all afternoon to do this but it was well worth it. It's amazing how you always find something new each time you go around a location. What I also like to do is go around in the other direction after the first round is completed. Things just jump out that craves to be photographed.

The Voigtländer 21 f4 was picked up on ebay for a very good price and it fits licely on the Sony Nex-5N. This camera is truely a great photographic machine. The more I use it the more I prefer it to the Nex-7. I posted a few days ago that I've got a love - hate relationship going on with that camera. I now use my manual lenses on the Nex-5N only and have relegated the Nex-7 to the native E mount lenses. Not that there's a lot of choice there but a couple of lenses will do me as I tend to use that camera in good light conditions only.
