Nikon V1 - 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

Nikon V1 - 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

I thought I might show this image taken with the 32 f1.2. It's sharp and focus locked without any problems. I think it shows why this is the best lens for the 1 system at present.

I'm not going to show any more because I took another old friend with me to Spain, whose images I will be posting as from tomorrow. One thing I will say, it's not an interchangeable lens camera but I have been please with the images I've been getting from it for a few years now. It's my take everywhere camera and it's good up to ISO 400.

See you tomorrow.

Nikon V1 - 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

Let's get back to the 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2 for a couple of shots. I decided to show this image (which I posted a couple of days ago) in a larger version. I just wanted you to see what these images from the V1 are like at ISO 3200. I think it's very film like and no grain has been added. The image has just been converted to monochrome in Nik SFX II but nothing was done to the grain itself. Some sharpening was done after downsizing which may enhance the grain somewhat but not too much in my opinion. This is the sort of monochrome image I like which has nothing plasticky about it, which I see from time to time. It's very film like I believe.

Nikon V1 - 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

Although I had some trouble with locking focus in low light, it managed to lock a few times. Above are two images where successful focus lock was achieved.

The first was converted with Nik SFX II (as usual) and the second I left as is. Only a little processing in LR 5.2 was required. Sharpness is there and WB was very good, even in ever changing light.

More images from the 1 Nikon coming up shortly.

Nikon V1 - 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

Nikon V1 - 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

Some time ago I mentioned that I was taking the Nikon V1 system down to Spain with me. I wanted to see how the 32 f1.2 would be like for portraits because theoretically the focal length would be perfect. I had two V1 cameras with  me, one with the 32 f1.2 glued to it and the other with a couple of other primes, the 10 f2.8 and the 18 f1.8.

Because the lenses are really small and light (except for the 32 f1.2 which is considerably heavier) I also took a couple of zooms with me. This kit is so small and light there is no reason whatsoever to leave any lenses behind. I really didn't realize I had that much equipment with me and everything fitted in a small rucksack compartment. Just wonderful.

All in all, I was very impressed with the system as a whole and the 32 f1.2 is really nice; pretty much perfect for portraits. Yes, it isn't cheap but it's really worth the money. Just campare this lens with the Canon 85 f1.2L lens and you'll see what I mean. That Canon is a beast and relatively slow to focus.

Where I wasn't so impressed was with the low light focusing of the camera. It might be my fault here as I forgot to turn off the electronic shutter because that brings some disadvantages with it, especially in low light. However, generally speaking it wasn't worse than any other mirrorless camera using this configuration and I managed to get what was asked for.

Nikon V1 - 1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

I took the V1 down to the aquarium a couple of weeks ago. I stuck the 32 f1.2 on it to see what it could really do under these conditions. I think the above compilation says it all. People who say that this system is useless and totally crap, do not know what they're talking about. Ok it's still not as good at high ISO values but personally I'm not complaining. That silent shutter is amazing (plug: the GX7 has one too). Strange how I keep coming back to that camera.

The more I use this lens the more I like it. This wasn't take wide open, actually f4, but I like the way it renders the image. This is a one off right now, but I will post some more from my trip to Spain as soon as I can. I hope to take more portrait photos while I'm there, which is what this lens was made for, especially at f1.2 because it's still sharp at f1.2.

I'm not sure if you can see what I'm seeing at this size, but this image, to me, has definately a 3D look to it. maybe I should have posted this at a higher resolution than I did. This new 1 Nikkor lens is really nice and I'll be using it down in Spain shortly. It's going to make the perfect portrait lens (35=85) and it will be the first time I'll be using it on a shoot. I'm not a good portrait photographer but I'm hoping to do a little better this time around. I'm the designated photographer for the 10 day period I'll be there and I'm only taking the V1 with a few lenses. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will turn out ok. It's not something that can be repeated.

1 Nikkor 32 f1.2

When you look at this lens the first thing that goes through your mind is how small it is. The second thing that goes through your head, after picking it up, is how heavy it is. The third thing that goes through your mind is did I really pay all that money for this lens, because it's the dearest lens in the 1 Nikon system stable. What if it doesn't perform like I want it to?

I must say the performance of this lens is fantastic. Is it worth the money? A definite yes on that question. At the time of these test shots, I didn't have any dark venues to visit, as a matter of fact the light was bright and harsh but with the V1 capable of 1/16000th of a second shutter speed, there was no problem using this lens, even wide open.

The focus point was the middle of the handlebars and as you can see, DOF is pretty thin at f1.2, even on this smaller 1" sensor.
