Olympus OM 135 f3.5 on the Sony Nex-7

Olympus OM 135 f3.5 on the Sony Nex-7

Focusing manually on the Nex system with these legacy lenses and the peeking function offered by the system is really a joy. The system nailed this using the peeking fuction and it's really spot on. I have heard that a lot of people feel that the system isn't that accurate but I personally have had no problems with it. I set the system to medium and it seems work fine.

The brighter 135mm lenses (f2, f2.5 and f2.8) may deliver better performance but one big advantage of the f3.5 lenses is size and weight. They really are small and quite light. One disadvantage of these lenses is that you have to mount them using an adapter and these can make the lens seem rather large as it can add 2.5 to 3cms to the lens length. Doesn't sound much but it's a killer for some people. These systems are small and the whole point for some users to use the these systems on vacation etc is the size and weight. I fully agree with them but I enjoy using these legacy lenses so much the I'm willing to pay the price.

Olympus OM 135 f3.5 on the Sony Nex-7

Olympus OM 135 f3.5 on the Sony Nex-7

I've been looking at some 135mm lenses of late and have aquired 3 or 4 to see which one works best on the Nex system. I'm pretty sure that these old legacy lenses behave differently on the m4/3 system. Using a lens on the Nex system doesn't necessarily mean that you get the same rendition on the m4/3 system. One lens might work on one system but not so well on the other. The way I see it at the moment the longer lenses work better on the m4/3 system and the shorter focal lengths work better on the Nex system. I'm going to have to test these lenses on both systems to see if my instincts are true or not. By longer focal lengths I'm talking about lenses of 90mm and upwards. I've now aquired all the lenses I need to do the tests, all I need now is time :-)
This is a nice portrait taken on the Olympus OM 135 f3.5 and the rendition is quite nice. One of the best in its class.

Ever watch the clouds go by? I have and do it a lot. Amazing to see how they change so quickly. I always seem to see faces or shapes up there.
This was taken with the Olympus OM-D, a real snappy camera. The lens was the 45 f1.8. Very sharp and a real bargain. If you haven't got it, get it. Fantastic portrait lens and it does a lot of other things pretty well too. The OM-D is a classy camera, very well thought out and very snappy to focus.

Sigma 30 f2.8 for Nex IX

Sigma 30 f2.8 for Nex IX

This is the last of the Sigma 30 f2.8 posts for the moment. If you're intersested in some more images from this lens then there's a small gallery here. I had a great time testing the 19 f2.8 and the 30 f2.8 around Frankfurt. Great weather and a great little walk. I must do more of it when time permits.

That is one long ship. Used for cruising up and down the Main and Rhein I think. I had to walk quite far down the Main to get the whole ship in the photo. Maybe the 19 f2.8 would have been better here.

Sigma 30 f2.8 for Nex VII

Sigma 30 f2.8 for Nex VII

Notice how the square image format is slowly taking over from the conventional 3:2 format. I wish they would bring out a camera that had a dedicated square format. I know they exist in medium format but the prices are just out of this world. Saying that, Leica have just brought out a B&W dedicated camera, so someone, somewhere just might be working of a 1:1 format sensor. I hope they are.

I think the images I'm getting from the two new Sigma lenses are impressive. I don't mean that the images are masterpieces, just that the image quality is very good. Looking forward to using these for some serious photography.

Sigma 30 f2.8 for Nex V

Sigma 30 f2.8 for Nex V

I have noticed with some of my cameras (especially with the m4/3 ones) that sometimes I get a better sharper image if I use it in portrait format. Not all the time but with certain lens it is the case. I tried to replicate this phenomenon on the Nex using the 30 f2.8 but it seems not to matter. I get the exact same crispness in landscape and portrait mode. Glad about that because it does have me thinking when using my m4/3 cameras.
