Yashica 55 f2

I found this fungus growing in the shaded part of a tree behind some bushes. I think it's the biggest and brightly coloured one I've ever seen. Really fantastic. Sometimes I tend to underestimate the amount of depth I need for a subject to be in complete focus. I made the mistake here, I shoud have stopped down another stop or maybe two. I still like this image though.

Background separation. Some like it some don't. Portraitists like it I believe because the subject is brought out as the image. Which is what they want of course. I managed to separate this foxglove because of the aperture I used and the distance to the trees in the background. Again I wanted to bring the foxglove to the fore as the main subject of the image and contrast was again high. Dialled in negative EV again so the background goes dark and press the shutter. It takes you a little time to get the focus right because you have to go beyond the focal plane and back again. I do this a few times before I decide on the focus point I need for the subject to be in focus. Fun though.

An excellent function of these mirrorless cameras is that when looking through the EVF you see exactly how the image will turn out. Live view. This image is a perfect example of what I mean. The sun was shining on this dead fern, causing high contrast and the DR was outside the scope of what the camera can achieve. So, you have to decide how you want the image to look. Here I wanted the fern to be highlighted with no burnt out highlights. I dialled in a lot of negative EV to achieve this but I could still control how much I wanted because of the image I was seeing through the EVF. I just let the background go black and the fern was looking exactly the way I wanted.

Going off topic slightly here, but the image was still taken with the Yashica 55 f2 lens on the OM-D. I just see some images will work in B&W and when I see that I convert these images immediately with Nik SFXII. I don't see these thing all the time but once in a while one image does stand out from the rest, and the image above is one of those. It might be difficult to see at this size but it's all about how the light fally on these withering leaves. This piece of software gives you so much control on how you do the conversion, it's difficult to stop playing around with the settings and just say "OK, that's finished".
For those who haven't tried this software package, I highly recommend that you do. You won't look back once you've tried it. It's addictive.

Notice the shallow DOF you get with these lenses and sensor size. A lot of people like the m4/3 format because of the increase in DOF you get because of the smaller sensor. These tend to be landscape photographers who require everything in focus from near to infinity. It can however, work the other way around. Because of the 2x factor with the focal length and the fact that the longer the focal length of the lens, the shallower the DOF will be, you can produse effects like in the image above.

I tried this lens on the OM-D and found the resolution and contrast very good. But it is harder than using these lenses on the NEX I admit. I tend not to use the magnify function on these cameras as it distracts me. I've got used to it now that I get perfect focus 95% of the time.
The next few posts I willl try to show you what is possible with these lenses. If you're willing to put the effort in the rewards can be very high. Most, if not all of these images, were taken wide open at f2 or thereabouts.

Coming back to manual focus legacy lenses is really fun. This was about the first one I bought on a whim on ebay for a pittance and it's one of the better manual focus lenses on my shelf. It's actually the lens that got me into these legacy lenses and showed me the potential they have on modern cameras. I'm not saying that they're better than the newer lenses and the fancy coatings they have but it is fun using them and it has put something back into my photography thas was missing for some time.
It actually slows you down too and makes you think about your composition. Care is needed when focusing on m4/3 cameras as the peeking fuction implemented on the NEX cameras is sorely missing.

Panasonic 25 f1.4 mounted on the OM-D

The last for now from the 25 f1.4. Just a taster for you. I'll post some more images when I think they're good enough. Probably at the end of next month or thereabouts.
Really impressed here with the sharpness of the lens and with the DR of the Olympus OM-D. The hightlights were really harsh here but the OM-D managed to keep it all together.

This really is the lens to get for m4/3 format. I've heard a lot about it but really didn't think I needed it until I was shooting a dancing show in low light. That was it, I caved in and got it. Really sharp and works well on the OM-D. Just a couple of shots with this lens right now but I promise there will be more on this lens.

The E-620 seems to have more noise in the images than the E-420 which is another reason I prefer the images from the E-420. I've used the Vario-Elmarit 14-150 f3.5-5.6 on the E-420 a lot and since the lens had ILIS it worked out great. That lens is sharp at all apertures at all focal lenths. It also still retails for some €1100. Quite an asking price but well worth it in my mind.
